La Rioja Alta Reserva \"890\" 1962

In 1890, 5 families from the north of Spain, each passionate about wines, established the Sociedad Vinícola de La Rioja Alta - The Wine Society of the Rioja Alta.  A few years later, in 1904, one of these founding-members proposed the merger of his Ardanza winery with the society and thus the creation of La Rioja Alta S.A.

The \"890\" is today LRA's absolute flagship wine, second to none - and along with their \"904\" is released only on exceptional years.  The \"Reserva 890\" is the predecessor to the current \"Gran Reserva 890.\"  This wine is from the 1962 vintage, a blend of old-vine Tempranillo (95%) with Graciano (3%) and Mazuelo (2%) which has been matured for 6 years in American oak barrels.

A Gordon and MacPhail bottling of Ledaig, distilled in May 1993 and bottled in August 2011. 

Matured in a refill sherry butt.

Initially released in 2004 for travel retail, the Quarter Cask quickly became a core-range product.  

Aged for five years before being finished in a quarter cask for a final seven months.
