Viña Tondonia Gran Reserva 1973

Bodegas López de Heredia is located by Haro, in the heart of the Rioja Alta region.  One of the first 3 commercial wine houses to be built, the history and success of the region and the estate are closely linked.

Viña Tondonia is one of the cellars of the renowned Rioja estate, Bodegas López de Heredia.  A blend of Tempranillo (75%), Garnacho (15%), Graciano and Mazuelo together contributing only 10%, aged in oak barrels for 10 years.  Confusingly, the main label is that of Viña Tondonia's Gran Reserva releases, while the cap-label asserts the wine to be only \"Rioja de Crianza.\"

[GEEK EDIT]:  The current terminology of Crianza, Reserva & Gran Reserva only came into official use following a Royal-Decree in 1979; prior to which the term \"Crianza\" meant simply that the wine had been aged in oak barrels; Don Pedro López Heredia, lawyer and co-owner of Viña Tondonia, was notable in his objection to this new system of categorisation and so continued to label his wines as before: with the neck-label stating only \"Crianza\" (ie. simply meaning \"Aged in oak\").  The main-label is however the same as those of later vintages which did carry the Gran Reserva terminology.

Muga Rioja Reserva 1985 3x75cl

Established in 1932, Bodegas Muga is located in the historical Barrio de La Estación (railway station district) in Haro, La Rioja Alta.  The Muga family owned estate has gradually increased their vineyard holding to their current 5 sites across the region, each contributing differing characters and quality to the resulting wines.

Their Muga Reserva is a blend of Tempranillo (~70%) and Garnacha (~20%) with Graciano and Mazuelo together combining approximately 10%.  Muga typically choose to age their wines in oak barrels for longer periods than required for each classification; this Reserva spent 24 months in oak & 12 months in bottle (the minimum requirement for Reserva is 12 months in oak & 24 months in bottle).  Indeed, with the additional post-release bottle ageing, this wine has actually since fulfilled the requirements of Gran Reserva (minimum 24 months in oak & 36 months in bottle) - so, more wine for your money!

Bidding advice

You can place bids either under the lot image on the main auction page or on the right side of the individual lot page.

Placing a Maximum Bid
Use the "Set your bid limit" button on the left side of the bidding panel to enter the highest amount you're willing to bid on a lot. Our system will then automatically raise your bid in set increments if you’re outbid, up to your maximum. If someone bids above your set limit, we’ll notify you by email so you can choose whether to increase your bid.

Placing a Single Bid
Alternatively, place a single bid by selecting the button on the right side of the bidding panel. The button displays the amount needed for the next increment. For example, if the current highest bid is £50.00, the button will show "+ £55.00" (reflecting a £5.00 increment).
