Yamazaki 18 Year Old

Suntory’s flagship distillery, Yamazaki distillery was founded by Shinjiro Torii in 1923.

The town of Yamazaki was chosen to be the site of Japan’s first commercial distillery due to its very ‘Scottish’ climate and with it being an area where three rivers converge.

The first spirit ran from the stills in 1924, on 11th November at 11:11am. Interestingly, not all of Suntory's whisky is matured at the distillery where it was produced. Larger casks such as butts and puncheons are kept at Yamazaki due to its warmer temperatures, whereas the colder climate at Hakushu distillery is better suited to Suntory's smaller casks such as barrels and hogsheads.

The majority of casks however are kept at Suntory's Ohmi Ageing Cellar, a vast warehouse situated forty miles northwest of Yamazaki. In addition to efficiently harnessing climatic conditions, this arrangement also prevents an entire distillery’s stock being lost in the event of a natural disaster – a serious possibility in an earthquake-prone area such as Japan.

Harry E Wilken 1917 AMS Co Special Old Reserve Bourbon Pint / Prohibition Era Bottling

Distilled in 1917, this bourbon was protected in bond by the American Medicinal Spirits Company from the Prohibition Act of 1920, which made alcohol production and consumption illegal.

This was bottled in 1932, a year before the Prohibition was repealed. The whiskey was produced by Harry E. Wilken, distillery no. 368 in the 5th district of Kentucky.

The American Medicinal Spirits Company was one of only 6 distilling companies to survive Prohibition of the 434 that existed prior. Exploiting the medicinal loophole was the brainchild of Otto Wathen, an idea which continues to prove its value today in the persisting image of his still ever-popular portfolio, which included the bourbon classic, Old Grand-dad. The AMS Co would eventually be acquired by National Distillers, who became one of the \"big four\" post-Prohibition spirits companies in the US, along with Schenley, Hiram Walker and Seagram's. The Harry E. Wilken distillery did not survive.

This 1 pint bottle was filled by the American Medicinal Spirits Company at distillery bonded warehouse no. 19, also in the 5th district of Kentucky, permit no. Ky P-19.

Hill and Hill 1917 AMS Co Kentucky Bourbon Pint / Prohibition Era Bottling

Distilled in 1917, this bourbon was protected in bond by the American Medicinal Spirits Company from the Prohibition Act of 1920, which made alcohol production and consumption illegal.

This was bottled in the Fall of 1933, a few months before Prohibition was repealed. The whiskey was produced by S.P. Lancaster, distillery no. 415 in the 5th district of Kentucky. It did not survive prohibition.

The American Medicinal Spirits Company was one of only around 30 distilling companies to survive Prohibition of the 434 that existed prior. Exploiting the medicinal loophole was the brainchild of Otto Wathen, an idea which continues to prove its value today in the persisting image of his still ever-popular portfolio, which eventually included Old Grand-dad, Old Taylor and Old Crow, among many others. The American Medicinal Spirits Company was eventually subsumed by National Distillers, who along with Schenley, Hiram Walker and Seagram's, became the \"big 4\" American whiskey companies following the eventual repeal of Prohibition.

This 1 pint bottle was filled by the American Medicinal Spirits Company at distillery bonded warehouse no. 19, also in the 5th district of Kentucky, permit no. Ky P-19, this may have been the same site as the defunct Lancaster distillery.
