Haig's Pinch 1950s / US Import

An old bottle of Pinch. Pinch is the American release of Dimple and was produced by Haig & Haig. Interestingly, in 1958 the Dimple bottle was the first container to be trademarked by the US Patent office, this was because of its unique design.

The Haig family had a long history of distilling going back as far as the 15th Century. Since 1824 when Cameronbridge distillery was opened by John Haig, Haig has been a big brand in the whisky world. As part of a distilling dynasty John Haig became important in the regulation of Whisky production and was a spokesman for the industry. Although the brand began to shrink in the 1970s, in the last year it has seen a healthy revival with the help of Mr Posh Spice David Beckham.

I.W. Harper Gold Medal Bottled in Bond Bourbon 86 Proof 1970s

The I.W. prefix in this brand name derives from Isaac Wolfe Bernheim, who founded the brand. With his brother he helped establish Louisville in Kentucky as a centre for Bourbon production. Sadly, he felt Harper was a more marketable name than his own to apply to the bottles.

This was distilled and bottled at the Bernheim distillery in Louisville by the Schenley company.

Schenley were eventually bought over by United Distillers who discontinued the I.W. Harper brand in the 1980s. The modern iteration of United Distillers, Diageo, revived the brand in 2015, although it is no longer made at Bernheim, which was sold to Heaven Hill in 1999.

This was bottled at 80 US proof for the Italian market, where the Bottled in Bond regulations did not apply. Imported by Stock, Trieste.

Hakushu 12 Year Old

Hakushu was built in 1973 at the foot of the Southern Japan Alps, a location deliberately chosen by Suntory to provide a contrast to the style of spirit produced at Yamazaki.

Interestingly, a second distillery was built in 1981 (referred to as Hakushu East) which has stills of varying shapes and sizes which are able to produce a wide range of distillate character. This is in contrast to the now-dormant old site (referred to as Hakushu West) which had 24 large stills identical in shape and size, but only capable of producing one particular style of distillate.

This age statement was discontinued as of June 2018.

Bidding advice

You can place bids either under the lot image on the main auction page or on the right side of the individual lot page.

Placing a Maximum Bid
