Chateau Mouton-Rothschild 1979

From the Paulliac Appellation in the Haute-Medoc sub-region on the left-bank of the Bordeaux. Hugh Johnson (Master of Wine) has said, \"If one had to single out one commune of Bordeaux to head the list, there would be no argument. It would be Pauillac.\"

The official birth of what we know as Chateau Mouton Rothschild took place in 1853. At that time, Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild, an English member of the Rothschild family, purchased a property in Pauillac called Chateau Brane-Mouton. As was the custom of the day, the new owner renamed it using his name and Chateau Mouton Rothschild was born. In 1868, James Rothschild, another member of the family purchased Chateau Lafite.

Mouton Rothschild was considered a Second Growth when the Classification took place in 1855. After existing for over 100 years without a single change, nobody believed the Classification would ever change. Chateau Mouton Rothschild beacme the only estate to  succeed in changing the 1855 classification: Chateau Mouton Rothschild became officially a “Premier Cru Classé” (First Classified Growth).
In 1973, the front label on every bottle of Chateau Mouton Rothschild boasted…
“Premier je suis, second je fus, Mouton ne change”.
First I am, second I was, I Mouton do not change.

Today the vineyard of Chateau Mouton Rothschild is planted to 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot.

Compass Box This Is Not A Luxury Whisky / US Import 75cl

Inspired by René Magritte's 1929 surrealist painting 'Ceci n'est pas une pipe'. ... This is not a pipe.

The liquid inside is 79% 1st fill sherry matured Glen Ord 19 Year old, 18% Strathclyde 40 Year Old grain and 4% 30 Year Old Caol Ila.

Now for the controversy, apparently by showing the above information Compass Box (and technically Whisky Auctioneer) are breaking EU Law. The Scotch Whisky Association received a complaint from a brand owner about Compass box being transparent about the contents of a blend. Under Regulation 12.3 of the Spirit Drinks Regulation No 110/2008, any mention of a maturation period or age could only refer to the ‘youngest alcoholic component’ in a spirit. This rule applies to the ‘description, presentation or labelling’ of a spirit drink – including advertising, promotion and images.

While not normally ones to take a position on such things, we here at Whisky Auctioneer are all in favour of transparency and feel that Compass Box are 100% in the right by showing the full composition of their blend.

Chateau Margaux, Grand Vin 1975

From the Margaux Appellation (to which it gives its name) in the Medoc sub-region on the left-bank of the Bordeaux, where Cabernet Sauvignon is dominant (though Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec are all permissable). This 1er Grand Cru Classe dates back to the 12th century when it was know as “La Mothe de Margaux” and is steeped in history, haveing been drank by Thomas Jefferson who famously declared  “There couldn’t be a better Bordeaux bottle”

The Margaux vineyard for the production of red wine is planted to 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot and 2% Cabernet Franc. This shows a marked increase in the amount of Cabernet Sauvignon planted in the vineyards. The final blend on average usually contains close to 85% Cabernet Sauvignon in most vintages. On average, the vines are 35 years of age. However, there are parcels with very Cabernet Sauvignon vines, which are close to 80 years of age.

Chateau La Mission Haut Brion 1966

The only red-wine producer outside the Haut-Médoc classified in the Bordeaux Wine Official Classification of 1855, the premier cru Château Haut-Brion, and also includes all of the châteaux listed in the 1953/59 classification of Graves fo which La Mission-Haut-Brion is one.

La Mission-Haut-Brion is situated just across the road from Haut-Brion in the commune of Talence in the southern suburbs of Bordeaux. This bottle predates the unifiction of ownership in 1983, when both properties came under the same ownership, Domaine Clarence Dillon S.A. La Mission-Haut-Brion's vineyards (Cabernet Sauvignon 48%, Merlot 45%, Cabernet Franc 7%) lie on a large (up to 18 metres deep in places) gravel bank interspersed with clay. The wine is fermented in temperature-controlled, stainless steel vats and then matured in oak barriques (100% new) for 18 months.
