Caol Ila 1979 Gentle Noses 28 Year Old / Ark of the Covenant Part 1

This was bottled by Lars-Goran Wiebers, aka \"Jack.\" He is the proprietor of the renowned Jack Wiebers Whisky World retailer in Germany, established in 1996. Since then has released a number of respected independent bottlings under labels such as the Old Train Line, Gentle Noses, The Cross Hill and Auld Distillers Alliance.

The Gentle Noses label was introduced in 2004 and is based on the story of rival families in China called Lee and Foo, who apparently quarelled over who has the better nose. The series pits Jack Wiebers fictional Jack Lee against Jumping Foo in a serie of competitions to sniff out the finest whisky. Each bottle is labelled over the capsule as the selection of one or the other.

This Caol Ila is part one of the Ark of the Covenant (Die Bundeslade) series. A 1979 vintage, it was bottled from a bourbon cask in 2007.

Caol Ila distillery was built in 1846 by Hector Henderson, who was bought out from the venture a little over 10 year later by Bulloch Lade. The blending firm merged with DCL (now Diageo) in 1927, who still run the distillery today. In 1972 the original site was demolished and replaced by a new one. When distilling resumed in 1974, Caol Ila was the largest producer of single malt on the Isle of Islay. Despite this, due to its importance in popular blends such as Johnnie Walker, its single malt brand disappeared under United Distillers, and it was not until 2002 that it would return, when the 12 year old was revived by Diageo. The Flora & Fauna release was well-regarded in the meantime, but it was independent releases like this that gave the best opportunity to sample this much-loved single malt.

Clynelish 1997 Moon Import / Lawless

Moon Import was founded by Pepi Mongiardino in 1980 and he bottled his first whisky in 1982. Always beautifully labelled, Pepi is acclaimed for designing the packaging for Moon Import bottles himself, often using images found in old books. These iconic designs, coupled with the quality of the liquid saw Moon Import steadily grow in popularity. The company is still going strong, and their early releases are some of the brightest gems in any whisky collection.

This Clynelish was distilled in 1997 and bottled in 2019 as part of the Lawless series, first bottled in 2015 for the company's 35th anniversary.

Highland Park 1992 Singles of Silvano Samaroli Flowing Feature

Samaroli is perhaps Italy's most revered independent bottler of Scotch whisky. With an impeccable taste in single cask whiskies, and an eye for aesthetics (if not English spelling at times!), he is regarded by many as a visionary. Many of his bottles now occupy deserved sports on the pantheon of whisky greats. Having handed the reigns of the Samaroli company to Antonio Bleve in 2008, Silvano began bottling casks from his personal collections under this Singles of Silvano Samaroli brand. Releases like this one were initially supervised by the man himself, but since his death in 2017, the tradition has been lovingly continued by Masam, the bottling company run by his wife, Maryse Accorsi Samaroli.

This Highland Park was distilled in 1992 and bottled from single cask #1252 in 2016.

Highland Park was built by David Robertson all the way back in 1798. The distillery's relationship with blenders, Robertson & Baxter, saw it acquired by Highland Distillers in 1937, who were subsequently bought by Edrington in 1999, who run it today. The modern Highland Park single malt brand was first officially bottled in the 1970s, with the release of an 8 year old age statement, but distillery bottlings first appeared around the 1950s. The look of the brand has changed many times over the years, but its cult following and popularity has never diminished. It remains one of the most recognisable single malts in the world to this day.

Coleburn 1983 Jack Wiebers 26 Year Old / Old Train Line

A cask strength release, this Coleburn was matured in a bourbon cask and bottled as part of the Old Train Line series in 2010.

Coleburn is a lesser-seen single malt, important in its time to the Usher's and Johnnie Walker Red Label blends. It was owned for the majority of the 20th century by DCL (now Diageo), who closed it down alongside many others in their portfolio in the early 1980s. There have been no official distillery bottlings outside of the Rare Malts Selection series, but a number of sought after independent releases like this have appeared over the years. The site of Coleburn is now owned by Aceo, the parent company of Murray McDavid.

Caledonian 1965 Moon Import / The Last Fetish

This is a single cask Caledonian, distilled in 1965 and bottled in 2011 from hogshead #4. This is part of the well-regarded The Last Fetish series, all of which feature artwork by long-time collaborator Nadia Pini. One of 208 bottles.

Caledonian is a lost grain distillery, built in Edinburgh by Graham Menzies & Co. It operated a single column still, once described by James Grant as the \"greatest in Scotland,\" and later two pot stills which produced an Irish-style grain whisky. It became the seventh member of DCL in 1884. When DCL merged with Guinness in 1986 to form United Distillers, the company's enormous portfolio of distilleries required streamlining, and Caledonian was one of those that did not survive the cull, shut down for good in 1988. It has only twice been officially bottled as a single grain, once in its lifetime as a commemorative bottling for the 1986 Commonwealth games in its home city, and later under The Cally brand by Diageo. Thankfully, releases like this have appeared over the decades under independent labels.

Hampden 1992 Silvano's Collection

The Silvano’s Collection label is produced by Masam, an independent bottling company run by Maryse Accorsi Samaroli, the wife of the legendary Silvano Samaroli. The Samaroli firm has been run by Antonio Bleve since 2008, however casks from Silvano's private collection have also been bottled under the Singles of Silvano Samaroli banner. These were initially supervised by the man himself, but since his death in 2017, the tradition has been lovingly continued by his wife.

This Hampden rum is one of 270 bottles filled in 2019 from cask #8.

The Hampden Estate was founded in 1753 by a Scotsman called Archibald Sterling, in the Queen of Spain valley of Jamaica’s Trelawny parish. For 250 years it remained family owned, selling rum to third-party blenders and independent bottlers. Mismanagement however meant that by 2003 it was in financial trouble, with the Jamaican government stepping in to assume ownership and some of its debt in order to preserve the jobs of its employees. They sold it in 2009 to the Hussey family’s Everglades Farms, who as first point of business began laying down the casks that would eventually become the first Hampden Estate labelled official bottling of the distillery’s rum, launched in collaboration with Velier in 2018. Famed for its heavy, ester-driven style, Hampden is joined by Worthy Park as the only two Jamaican distilleries that produce exclusively pure single rums (using only pot stills). It currently has four pot stills: two from Forsyths in Scotland, one from Vendome in Kentucky, and another from T&T Engineering in South Africa.

Clynelish 1995 Signatory Vintage 24 Year Old / LMDW 20 Rue d'Anjou

Clynelish distillery as it is recognised today, was built in 1967 to replace the a smaller distillery next-door, which was the original site of that name. Despite being an important part of the Johnnie Walker blends, it has long been bottled as a single malt. 

This is a single cask bottling distilled in 1995 and bottled in 2019 by Signatory Vintage. It was matured in refill sherry butt #2158 before being bottled exclusively for legendary French spirit merchants La Maison du Whisky.

Signatory Vintage were established in 1988 by Andrew Symington and are one of Scotland's most prolific independent bottlers. Their offices and bottling facility are located next to Edradour distillery, which they have also owned since 2002.

La Maison du Whisky, aka LMDW, was founded in 1956 by Georges Benitah and is now one of the largest whisky and rum importers and distributors in France, and known the world over. They opened their first shop in Paris at the legendary 20 Rue d'Anjou in 1968, importing their first Scotch malt whiskies in the 1970s. They are known for their expertise in not only Scotch, but Japanese whisky and rum too, and their collaborative bottlings, as well as their own independent labels like this one, are highly prized.

Cragganmore distillery was built by John Smith at the end of the 19th century. An astute businessman, he selected the location of his distillery to facilitate easy trade with his customers, and produced spirit geared fully towards the needs of the blending companies. It was not long before it was considered one of the finest for such a purpose, and the distillery was eventually acquired by White Horse Distillers. When White Horse were bought by DCL, its subsequent iteration, United Distillers, selected it as part of their Classic Malts series in 1988, officially launching its single malt brand. Despite this, its importance to Diageo's blends means that other distillery bottlings are scarce, and it remains somewhat of a hidden gem. Thankfully, the occasional casks have been made available to independent bottlers over the years.

Caperdonich 1994 Jack Wiebers 21 Year Old Great Ocean Liners / Whisky Ship Zurich

This was bottled by Lars-Goran Wiebers, aka \"Jack.\" He is the proprietor of the renowned Jack Wiebers Whisky World retailer in Germany, established in 1996. A Caperdonich, this was distilled in 1994 and bottled in 2015 as part of the Great Ocean Liners series, for the Whisky Ship Zurich event.

Caperdonich distillery was built next-door to Glen Grant in 1892, and for much of its history was known simply as Glen Grant 2. Expansion via additional distillery has been a method used by several producers over the years, but Glen Grant was the first. Glen Grant 2 was only open for 4 years after being built, and remained closed until 1965 when demand in Italy for Glen Grant single malt meant the second distillery was once again required to meet the needs of the blenders. Now legally required to have a different name, the site was christened Caperdonich. Glen Grant sold it on to Seagram in 1977, who continued to use it for blending purposes until they were wound up in the early 2000s. Pernod-Ricard acquired many of their assets in the Scotch industry in 2001, including Caperdonich which they shut down the following year. Its single malt was only briefly officially bottled while in operation, with further distillery bottlings only appearing from Pernod-Ricard in recent years. Production in its later years was high however, and many independent bottlings of this hidden Speyside gem have been produced.

Coilltean was originally a label devised by Samaroli to give more variety to his portfolio after over-purchasing cask of Glen Garioch. By the early 2000s he was using many distilleries to bottle Coilltean, and now disclosing their names. These are some of the first releases to bear the contentious \"refined inside the bottle since...\" text, that the Scotch Whisky Association abhored, but Silvano full believed in.

Cameronbridge 26 Year Old Jack Wiebers / Monnier Trading House Fair

This was bottled by Lars-Goran Wiebers, aka \"Jack.\" He is the proprietor of the renowned Jack Wiebers Whisky World retailer in Germany, established in 1996. Since then has released a number of respected independent bottlings under labels such as the Old Train Line, Gentle Noses, The Cross Hill and Auld Distillers Alliance.

This is a 26 year old Grain whisky that has been finished in a sherry cask. It was selected specially for Swiss distributors, Monnier Trading for their 2018 House Fair.

The Cameronbridge distillery was built in 1824 along with the establsihment of John Haig & Co, a legendary blending company with links to both the Haig and Stein distilling dynasties. John Haig always had his finger firmly on the pulse of modernisation, and was one of the first distillers to use patent stills. When Alfred Barnard visited in the 1880s, the distillery operating two Stein patent stills (invented by his cousin, Robert), two coffey stills and pot still for producing Irish style grain. Cameronbridge was one of the founding members of DCL, and despite being run independently from it until 1919, it is today the only fully Diageo-owned grain distillery in Scotland. Although provision of their blends has always been its key purpose (as well as grain neutral spirit for Smirnoff and Gordon's, as of 1998), the distillery has two single grain brands, the historic Cameron Brig, and the recently devised Haig Club.

Highland & Islay Blended Malt 2006 Moon Import 35th Anniversary / Lawless

Moon Import was founded by Pepi Mongiardino in 1980 and he bottled his first whisky in 1982. Always beautifully labelled, Pepi is acclaimed for designing the packaging for Moon Import bottles himself, often using images found in old books. These iconic designs, coupled with the quality of the liquid saw Moon Import steadily grow in popularity. The company is still going strong, and their early releases are some of the brightest gems in any whisky collection.

Bottled in 2015, this is a 35th anniversary release and part of the Lawless series. This is a blend of single malts from the Highlands and Islay, the youngest of which was distilled in 2006.

Clynelish 2004 Silvano's Collection Expression / Moon Import

The Silvano’s Collection label is produced by Masam, an independent bottling company run by Maryse Accorsi Samaroli, the wife of the legendary Silvano Samaroli. The Samaroli firm has been run by Antonio Bleve since 2008, however casks from Silvano's private collection have also been bottled under the Singles of Silvano Samaroli banner. These were initially supervised by the man himself, but since his death in 2017, the tradition has been lovingly continued by his wife.

This is a 2004 vintage Clynelish, drawn from cask #800101. One of 340 bottles filled in 2018. The cask was selected from Silvano's collection jointly by Maryse and Pepi Mongiardino of the legendary Italian distirbutors and contemporary of Samaroli, Moon Import.

Clynelish 2008 LMDW The Ten #3

La Maison du Whisky, aka LMDW, was founded in 1956 by Georges Benitah and is now one of the largest whisky and rum importers and distributors in France, and known the world over. They opened their first shop in Paris at the legendary 20 Rue d'Anjou in 1968, importing their first Scotch malt whiskies in the 1970s. They are known for their expertise in not only Scotch, but Japanese whisky and rum too, and their collaborative bottlings, as well as their own independent labels like this one, are highly prized. 

This is part of The Ten, a limited series introduced by LMDW in 2010 and bottled for them by Signatory Vintage. Each bottle represents a different flavour profile for whisky and was intended as a launch pad for those new to single malts. The releases are ranked from 0-9, lightest to strongest.

The blending firm merged with DCL (now Diageo) in 1927, who still run the distillery today. In 1972 the original site was demolished and replaced by a new one. When distilling resumed in 1974, Caol Ila was the largest producer of single malt on the Isle of Islay. Despite this, due to its importance in popular blends such as Johnnie Walker, its single malt brand disappeared under United Distillers, and it was not until 2002 that it would return, when the 12 year old was revived by Diageo. The Flora & Fauna release was well-regarded in the meantime, but it was independent releases like this that gave the best opportunity to sample this much-loved single malt.

A cask strength release, this Caperdonich was bottled as part of the Old Train Line series in 2013.

Caperdonich distillery was built next-door to Glen Grant in 1892, and for much of its history was known simply as Glen Grant 2. Expansion via additional distillery has been a method used by several producers over the years, but Glen Grant was the first. Glen Grant 2 was only open for 4 years after being built, and remained closed until 1965 when demand in Italy for Glen Grant single malt meant the second distillery was once again required to meet the needs of the blenders. Now legally required to have a different name, the site was christened Caperdonich. Glen Grant sold it on to Seagram in 1977, who continued to use it for blending purposes until they were wound up in the early 2000s. Pernod-Ricard acquired many of their assets in the Scotch industry in 2001, including Caperdonich which they shut down the following year. Its single malt was only briefly officially bottled while in operation, with further distillery bottlings only appearing from Pernod-Ricard in recent years. Production in its later years was high however, and many independent bottlings of this hidden Speyside gem have been produced.

Cragganmore 1989 High Spirits 15 Year Old / Memories

Cragganmore distillery was built by John Smith at the end of the 19th century. An astute businessman, he selected the location of his distillery to facilitate easy trade with his customers, and produced spirit geared fully towards the needs of the blending companies. It was not long before it was considered one of the finest for such a purpose, and the distillery was eventually acquired by White Horse Distillers. When White Horse were bought by DCL, its subsequent iteration, United Distillers, selected it as part of their Classic Malts series in 1988, officially launching its single malt brand. Despite this, its importance to Diageo's blends means that other distillery bottlings are scarce, and it remains somewhat of a hidden gem. Thankfully, the occasional casks have been made available to independent bottlers over the years.

High Spirits are the second bottling company started by Nadi Fiori, co-founder of the acclaimed Intertrade. Like many of his contemporaries, his bottlings are known for their artistic labels. Clynelish 1995 Samaroli Glen Cawdor 50cl

A bottle of Clynelish that was selected by Samaroli and bottled under his famous Gen Cawdor name.

Samaroli is perhaps Italy's most revered independent bottler of Scotch whisky. With an impeccable taste in single cask whiskies, and an eye for aesthetics (if not English spelling at times!), he is regarded by many as a visionary. Many of his bottles now occupy deserved sports on the pantheon of whisky greats

The Glen Cawdor name was in part borrowed by Silvano Samaroli from Shakespeare; Castle Cawdor of course being the setting for MacBeth. Samaroli used the Glen Cawdor name to disguise the the real name of certain distilleries, most commonly Springbank.

A cask strength release, this Caledonian single grain was matured in a bourbon cask and bottled as part of the Old Train Line series in 2017.

Caledonian is a lost grain distillery, built in Edinburgh by Graham Menzies & Co. It operated a single column still, once described by James Grant as the \"greatest in Scotland,\" and later two pot stills which produced an Irish-style grain whisky. It became the seventh member of DCL in 1884. When DCL merged with Guinness in 1986 to form United Distillers, the company's enormous portfolio of distilleries required streamlining, and Caledonian was one of those that did not survive the cull, shut down for good in 1988. Highland Park 1992 The Nectar of the Daily Drams 24 Year Old / 10th Anniversary Vol.9

Highland Park was built by David Robertson all the way back in 1798. The distillery's relationship with blenders, Robertson & Baxter, saw it acquired by Highland Distillers in 1937, who were subsequently bought by Edrington in 1999, who run it today. The modern Highland Park single malt brand was first officially bottled in the 1970s, with the release of an 8 year old age statement, but distillery bottlings first appeared around the 1950s. The look of the brand has changed many times over the years, but its cult following and popularity has never diminished. It remains one of the most recognisable single malts in the world to this day.

This Highland Park was distilled in 1992 and bottled in 2016 by The Nectar for their 10th anniversary. 

The Nectar was founded in Belgium in 2006 by Mario Groteklaes and Jan Broekmans. In addition to being a well-respected independent bottler, they are also one of Belgium's largest wine and spirit importers.

Caol Ila 1997 Jack Wiebers 19 Year Old Great Ocean Liners / Altenburger Whisky Verein

This was bottled by Lars-Goran Wiebers, aka \"Jack.\" He is the proprietor of the renowned Jack Wiebers Whisky World retailer in Germany, established in 1996. Since then has released a number of respected independent bottlings under labels such as the Old Train Line, Gentle Noses, The Cross Hill and Auld Distillers Alliance.

A Caol Ila, this was distilled in 1997 and bottled in 2016 as part of the Great Ocean Liners series, for the ALtenburger Whisky Verein.

Caol Ila distillery was built in 1846 by Hector Henderson, who was bought out from the venture a little over 10 year later by Bulloch Lade. The blending firm merged with DCL (now Diageo) in 1927, who still run the distillery today. In 1972 the original site was demolished and replaced by a new one. When distilling resumed in 1974, Caol Ila was the largest producer of single malt on the Isle of Islay. Despite this, due to its importance in popular blends such as Johnnie Walker, its single malt brand disappeared under United Distillers, and it was not until 2002 that it would return, when the 12 year old was revived by Diageo. The Flora & Fauna release was well-regarded in the meantime, but it was independent releases like this that gave the best opportunity to sample this much-loved single malt.

Caperdonich 1992 The Ultimate 19 Year Old

The Ultimate Whisky Company was founded in The Netherlands in 1994 by long-time whisky enthusiast, Han and Maurice van Wees. Their releases are always bottled without colouring or chill-filtration, with the most special casks saved for their Rare Reserve series.

This is a 1992 vintage Caperdonich, bottled in 2015.

Caperdonich distillery was built next-door to Glen Grant in 1892, and for much of its history was known simply as Glen Grant 2. Expansion via additional distillery has been a method used by several producers over the years, but Glen Grant was the first. Glen Grant 2 was only open for 4 years after being built, and remained closed until 1965 when demand in Italy for Glen Grant single malt meant the second distillery was once again required to meet the needs of the blenders. Now legally required to have a different name, the site was christened Caperdonich. Glen Grant sold it on to Seagram in 1977, who continued to use it for blending purposes until they were wound up in the early 2000s. Pernod-Ricard acquired many of their assets in the Scotch industry in 2001, including Caperdonich which they shut down the following year. Its single malt was only briefly officially bottled while in operation, with further distillery bottlings only appearing from Pernod-Ricard in recent years. Production in its later years was high however, and many independent bottlings of this hidden Speyside gem have been produced.

Clynelish distillery as it is recognised today, was built in 1967 to replace the smaller distillery next-door, which was the original site of that name. The first distillery was closed, but later re-opened, changing its name to Brora (but that’s another story). Clynelish is part of the Diageo stable, having been taken over by DCL in 1912. Despite being an important part of the Johnnie Walker blends, it has long been bottled as a single malt.
