The company named John Begg Limited was incorporated in 1916 as a subsidiary of John Dewar & Sons. Its predecessor, John Begg & Co was much older however, and built the Royal Lochnagar distillery on the in 1845. It joined the Distillers Company Limited along with Buchanan-Dewar in 1925 and remained part of the company and its successors until its eventual dissolution by Diageo in 2007.
In its time, John Begg produced a variety of blended Scotch known as Blue Cap and Gold Cap, and it is also marketed the Lochnagar and Royal Lochnagar single malt brands.
