Golden Horse
Golden Horse is a brand of whisky bottled in Japan by Toa Shuzo Co. It was first introduced during an upsurge in whisky consumption in Japan in the 1970s and was produced by the company using malt whisky imported in bulk from Scotland and column-distilled grain whisky produced at the Hanyu distillery. Its most premium offering was Golden Horse 100 which was exclusively Scottish production, with the ratio of in-house grain in the blends increasing towards the cheaper end of its portfolio. Hanyu switched to malt production in 1983 and Golden Horse Chichibu was brought to market to showcase its single malt in 2000. It was available in 8-, 10-, 12- and 14-year-old expressions until discontinued in 2004.
Having been fully divested from whisky for over a decade, Toa Shuzo Co eventually revived the Golden Horse brand in 2016. It is back to being a blend of imported whiskies from Scotland and its range features a blended malt called Musashi and a malt-and-grain blend called Bushu.
First Hanyu single malt is bottled as Golden Horse Chichibu, introduced as an 8-year-old.
Toa Shuzo Co is acquired by King Jozo Co and the brand is discontinued as part of divestment from whisky.
Golden Horse is relaunched with two blends called Bushu and Musashi.
